Online degrees have become a very popular way to get an education and for good reason, there are a lot of advantages to an online degree. There are however some disadvantages as well, and it is important to keep these in mind if you are considering an online degree. Most people find that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages but this isn't universally true. An online education isn't for everybody and you need to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.
The biggest disadvantage for most people when it comes to getting an online educations is that the social aspects of school are missing. For many people the social part is an important aspect of attending college, many people make life long friends while attending school. In fact for many people the social life is the only thing they even remember about college. For an online student there is no social part to attending school. There is little if any interaction with your fellow classmates, indeed you may not even have any classmates. Some schools require a online chats and conferences as part of the curriculum but that is hardly the same. This lack of interaction also means that you will have no classmates to help you study or to offer support.
There is also very limited contact with your professor if you are taking an online course and this can be another disadvantage for a lot of students. By and large you are on your own and will need to solve any problems that you have on your own. There is usually a way to contact your professor if you do get stuck but without speaking to him in person it can be difficult for him to help you understand. Online learning really requires students who are strong independent learners. Another downside of the limited interaction with your professors is that if you want to apply for graduate school you will likely need to submit a letter of recommendation from your professor. This can be a problem if you have never actually met your professor.
Another potential downside of an online education, although it is becoming less true every day, is that some people still view online degrees as being second class. Online degrees have become fairly mainstreams and nowadays shouldn't present a problem for most people but you will still encounter a few people who think online degrees are inferior to traditional degrees. The biggest offender for this is the world of academia, college professors themselves are the ones most likely to look down on an online degree. Of course this is largely because online education is a threat to their livelihood but it is something to keep in mind. If your goal is to become a college professor an online degree may be a problem.
